The stars are aligning for PC manufacturers. Typically, a generation of laptop and PCs run on a four-year cycle so in 2024 we would expect the next significant improvements. And for this next generation it is a significant one. The AI PC will run AI workloads locally using a GPU, CPU or NPU. Cloud use wouldn’t be necessary. This means that PCs will have significant performance upgrades without the dependence of internet connectivity. This bodes extremely well for Nvidia who is expected to outperform any market projection to date. The race is on for the AI PC and AI applications!
The greatest excitement that I feel is how AI will reconnect portions of our society that are tech-disconnected – especially baby boomers who don’t understand technology and those with disabilities. AI will be able to connect them to the world to those where technology is commonplace. It will be exciting to see how our world will change in just a few years.
While this is amazing, let us also be mindful that there are still portions of the world that have no internet connection, even in the United States. The connectivity gap exists in the US for millions still. This creates an economic disparity greater than anything that we have faced in the past. Our public library system becomes not only a lifeline for these communities but an enabler for job opportunities, educational programming and much more.
